Two of the co-founders, Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones, continue to run the company. Originally they created shows for children and thereafter works for adult audiences. Arguably one of the greatest puppetry companies in the world, Handspring has since collaborated with a succession of innovative South Africa directors including Malcolm Purkey, Barney Simon and artist William Kentridge. Apart from seasons throughout theatres across South Africa, Handspring has been presented at many international festivals including Edinburgh, the Avignon Festival, the Next Wave Festival at BAM in New York, The African Odyssey Festival at the Kennedy Centre in Washington, Theatre d' Automne in Paris, Theatre der Welt in Germany, as well as in Hong Kong, Singapore, Adelaide, Zurich and Bogota. The company provides an artistic home and professional base for a core group of performers, designers, theatre artists and technicians who collaborate with them on a project basis. Based in South Africa they continue to explore the boundaries of adult puppet theatre within an African context. |

Janni Younge in association with Handspring Puppet Company presents Ouroboros, a story of a love affair between a dancer and a poet. Using one of the great strengths of the puppetry medium, characters Andre and Nokobonisa are able to appear as multiple versions of themselves. We witness the unfolding drama of their lives from birth to death. Their living interactions form a web of relationships, revealing the interdependence of past, present and future.
Offering a swirling interaction of performers, exquisitely carved puppets, filigree shadow work, animation and original music by Neo Muyanga, Janni Younge's production is now expanded by her new collaboration with Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler of Handspring Puppet Company. The show runs in the Baxter Theatre, Cape Town, South Africa, from 1 to 11 June with tickets costing from R60 To R130.
Book now via Computicket.
Iqonga (from the Xhosa, meaning "platform, stage") is about collaboration and the exploration of puppetry as a unifying medium in the field of performance. It brings together artists from various backgrounds and creative disciplines for a common purpose - to create experimental short-form puppetry theatre.
Artists are invited to submit proposals for a 12 minute production that will be selected to form part of the 8 piece Iqonga programme. The purpose of Iqonga is to give established and emerging artists an opportunity to experiment with puppetry and visual theatre. Iqonga provides a fully equipped theatre, technical support, stage manager, advertising, puppetry training, a budget for puppet / object building costs and technical puppet-building support. Performances take place between the 3-11 September 2011 at the Out The Box Festival of Puppetry and Innovation, Cape Town, South Africa.
