| IL RITORNO D'ULISSE |

In 1998, the Handspring/Kentridge partnership produced a version of Monteverdi's opera,
Il Ritorno d'Ulisse, which opened at the KunstenFESTIVAL des Arts in Brussels (command performance for the King and Queen of Belgium and the Queen of the Netherlands). This time Handspring also worked with Philippe Pierlot and the Ricercar Quartet as well as a group of seven opera singers. With the assistance of Mannie Manim Productions, the show toured to Berlin in Germany, Amsterdam in Holland (command performance for the Queen of the Netherlands), Zurich in Switzerland, Lisbon in Portugal and to Pretoria and Grahamstown in South Africa. In Kentridge's version of Monteverdi's work, Ulysses is no longer in Ithaca. Instead, he lies reminiscing in a Johannesburg hospital bed. His romantic return to Penelope has become an epic dream that intersects not only with Classical Greece but also with Monteverdi's Venice and our own contemporary South Africa. |
